Unlike a wheel's point/line contact, its surface contact provides high material removal rates and uniform surface texture. Flexible flaps conform to slightly uneven surfaces. Large surface area aids heat dissipation, reducing workpiece thermal distortion. Two main types: with wire (aggressive cleaning) and without wire (fine finishing).

The flap/pad portion uses mainly aluminum oxide (metal) or silicon carbide (non-metal) abrasive. Grits range from very coarse P16 to fine P120. Backing plate diameters typically 100mm to 180mm, matched to grinder power. Center thread is commonly M14 (metric) or 5/8”-11 (imperial) for quick mounting.
Weld seam blending and large-area surface preparation (e.g., SA2.5 cleaning) in steel fabrication, shipbuilding, tank construction. Paint stripping in auto repair. Deburring and cleaning of castings. Concrete surface profiling. A key tool for pre-welding or pre-painting treatment.
